Bamboo behaves a bit like wood but is actually classified as a grass, and pretty much grows like a weed in the right climate, as in vast areas in China. Used for centuries there, bamboo is somewhat new to America commercially speaking, where it is primarliy used for interior woodworking and flooring. It has become very popular amongst those interested in green building products, since it takes only 5-6 years to mature for harvest and isn't particularly picky about soil conditions. Its natural color is straw/manilla yellow, and it can be steamed to bring out a warm carmel/tan color.
