| Skins
Goat - this is the all around
best skin to use. It is the least affected by changing weather conditions
and provides crisp, sharp slaps and pops while maintaining nice
bass. It tends to be thin and very sensitive, sounding its best
when played by someone skilled.
Calf - tends to be substantially
thicker than goat. The thickest calf skins are used on congas, but
we use skins thinner than that. These skins impart a warmer, rounder
tone, contrasting with the sharp sound of goat. The bass tone incorporates
more of a thud at the surface of the skin than goat,
making it a little easier for beginners to play.

The choice is a matter of preference.
Some drummers like the calfskin better, but a poised, flamboyant
percussionist would probably prefer goatskin. Most of the differences
are evident in the attack sound, that is, the sound
coming off the surface of the skin, rather than the sound inside
the chamber.
All custom orders may specify goat or calf, with no
price difference. Standard stock items are hit or miss, but we try
to keep both in stock.
