Mr. Jorge Jose Bermudez was born completely naked in Managua, Nicaragua. At least, that’s what he says, and we believe him. We also believe him to be a skillful and talented percussionist and composer, as well as a positively charged magnet, attracting many of the world’s best players to join him for his recordings and live performances.
Raised in the San Francisco Bay area, Jorge had played with Jorge Santana and Tito Puente while still a teenager. He later moved to Los Angeles where he has recorded and toured with an impressive list of artists including Rod Stewart, The Temptations, Johnny Mathis and Ann Margret.
In 1996 Jorge’s group Samba Nova was added to the legendary Carlos Santana Band for a series of tour dates including a show at the Summer Olympic Games in Atlanta. Jorge can also be heard playing percussion on the worldwide smash hit “Don’t Dream Its Over” by the multi-platinum Crowded House. He has joined Mickey Hart of the Grateful Dead for 2 Planet Drum albums, and is the leader of his own band, Bermudez Triangle, which he co-founded with sax player Cornelius Bumpus of The Doobie Brothers and Steely Dan fame.
Jorge’s musical contributions have also been broadcast in TV and film, including “The Shield” on F/X and “Robbery, Homicide Division” on CBS. He is also the bongo player that you heard at the beginning of the immensely popular syndicated TV show “The People’s Court”. His instructional DVD, entitled “Conga Drumming - A Beginner’s Guide,” features a cameo performance by high school percussion brother Raul Rekow of Santana fame. Jorge has taught clinics with Cuban conga legend Armando Peraza, and has been a visiting professor of percussion at the University of Taipei in Taiwan.
Jorge would like you all to know, “El beat muy grande goes on and on.” Sometimes when this happens it is because he is thumping a HandMade Rhythm solid stave Oregon Walnut ashiko with a flame cherry belly band and goat skin head.
