Hi, I'm Felly Smith, and thanks for visiting HandMade Rhythm.
I started making drums in 1992 while working in a cabinet shop
in North Florida, where I grew up. My father was an amateur woodworker
so by the time I was old enough to buy my own tools I was able to start
making a living working with wood. Back then I was buying Mahogany scraps
from a high end shop for a buck/foot!
In 1995 I moved to Oregon on a bit of a whim and have been here ever since.
During my very first week here, I stumbled across a large pile of Oregon
Walnut and Maple for sale in the attic of an old barn. I couldn't afford
it, since I had spent all I had and then some just to move out West, I had
no house or job yet, and had been camping at a lake in a patch of old growth
forest that no longer exists, but little did I know that would be the start of a
life long journey that would lead me on a quest for logs and piles of Pacific
NorthWest hardwoods still very close to their sources and the land they came from.
It would turn out that this would become the very definition of sustainable harvesting
of natural resources.
When you buy and play my drums, you are benefitting from the sum total of my experience
as a woodworker, musician, and artist. You are also benefitting from all I have learned
from hanging out with some of the best percussion players in the world. Every time I meet
with these folks, I come away with both technical and spiritual guidance that is invaluable
and impossible to quantify, yet goes directly into my intent as I continue to make drums.
